WHAT DO I NEED TO KNOW ABOUT LASER HAIR REMOVAL?

Laser hair removal has always worked best on light skin and dark hair.  However, the CoolGlide technology now allows us to treat all skin types including black and suntanned skin.  A nurse will evaluate your skin type and hair color prior to treatment.

People with blond hair or light red hair should expect to see less results than people with dark hair.  Gray and white hair cannot be treated, as there is no melanin in that color hair.

The treatment may feel like a mild sting or a rubber band snap for a fraction of a second.  There is a built-in cooling tip to help protect the skin and minimize discomfort.  However, depending upon the coarseness and density of the hair, discomfort will vary.  A topical anesthetic cream is available if you think you might need it.

The length of a treatment varies depending on the area to be treated.  They can range from an upper lip, which takes 10-15 minutes, to legs or a back, which can take from1-2 hours.  Very often follow-up treatments are shorter and less expensive as there is less hair to treat.

Four to five treatments spaced at least six weeks apart are necessary to assure the best results.  This is due to the cycles of hair growth.  The laser can only treat hairs in the active phase of growth.

You may notice no immediate change after your treatment.  Your skin may get slightly red or even develop a crust and peel.  The laser may leave red marks on your skin.  These will clear up in a few days.  The hair that has been destroyed will not fall out for 2-3 weeks.  Don’t worry if you do not see an obvious change after your first treatment.

The permanency of the treatment varies among patients.  From some, they may never need to shave, pluck or wax that area again.  For others, it may simply mean a significant decrease in the frequency with which they have to shave or pluck.  Everyone gets some re-growth with time regardless of the technology used.  However, hair that grows back will be much finer and less concentrated.

Avoid sunning for at least two weeks prior to treatment.  If you must be in the sun, use a sun block of at least spf30.

A day or two of growth is all that is needed to permit us to see what area you want to have treated.  Remember, it is not necessary for you to come in for treatment with significant visible hair.

Remove all makeup prior to any facial treatment.
